Session 1
Part 2 (25 April 20240)
Grammatical- Translation Method vs Subject-Verb-Object Approach for Teachers and Students
We have heard of GTM (Grammar-Translation Method) before and
most of us have been exposed and taught this way. This approach entails the use
of grammatical components as the main approach in the teaching of English. In
examinations, this approach seems to be quite effective as teachers drill the
students with grammar which most of it deals with nouns, verbs and
prepositions. They are then trained to write maintaining the common grammatical
components. Of course, the students managed to get through with flying colours
upon choosing to write narratives! In other words, they escaped writing factual
passages which require them to organise their thoughts and write cohesively and
coherently. This has been going on for years until they (the students) are put
to a halt when they have to sit for MUET. What happens is, they have no choice
but to write ONE factual essay which they have never done before. They do
not even know how to start.
